Light's are flashin on the highway
I wonder if we're gonna ever get home

A hard copy of President Malloy's remarks on the Davenport bombing, for anyone who needs a reference point. Though it seems almost insignificant to put them here. The words themselves could never reach the delivery given by the President, nor could any device I thought of recreate the experience of listening to him speak about this, or any other, matter.

It's been hectic here, to say the least. However, I finally found the time to write this:

Official Press StatementCollapse )

In other news, my father is sick. I thought I should put that on the table, you know, so no one finds out elsewhere. He's been in the hospital, which is why I didn't go home for Thanksgiving.

Also, I have turned 40.

Pop-tarts (a.k.a. A Memo To Xavier)

Nov. 8th, 2005 | 09:38 am
Feeling: exhaustedexhausted
Listening: Xavier humming Fat Boy Slim

I'm exhausted.

I've slept maybe 4 hours since we were officially moved into office. I tried going home to sleep, but I just sat in bed doing work until I remembered there was something I need at the office. So I got dressed and came back in. So last night I actually slept in my office, I took my lunch hour at 6AM to run home and change.

Not to self(and by self I mean Xavier): keep an extra suit at the office.

I think its been 36 hours since ate something that wasn't a pop-tart. No, wait, I had a microwaved slice of bread with pepperoni on it. Hmmm, I need to keep some of that in the office.

I really hope Xavier's reading this as it presented no practical value other than things I should keep in my office.

This place is a mad house. I thought it was bad before. With the president signed in now, there's twice as much to get done. The new staff is trying to get in as smoothly as possible, but that's turning out to be about as smooth as Jeep ride over a mountain covered in land-mines. Everytime I turn around something is broken or someone's lost. And now there's a terrible pounding in my head. Unless that's just Mark beating his head against his desk.

We've all got a million meetings all of the sudden and no one knows where anything is. You'd think that if people are expected to run a country from this building they would have made it a little easier to navigate. I've got Xavier with a map practically nailed to his forehead.

The ball was a beautiful event. I think it really sunk in that I'm really doing it, working in the White House. It was a good night, regardless of the dancing. I almost started to forget how much I hate dancing between trying to hold Mark up and dancing with the President. He is an exquisite dancer. Even better than Andrew was, and that's saying something, Andrew was a fantastic dancer.

But now it's back to writing statements and comments and remarks. It seems like I have to write something new for everytime the President sets foot outside his office.

This is what I'll be wearing to the ball. I don't love it, but it wasn't as horrible as all the others I looked at. If only I had a shawl or something to go over it.

Have a look...Collapse )

Listening: Hope Has A Place - Enya

I've finally fond an assistant. Today I was speaking with Jane over at Emily's List and she said I would never guess who's resume crossed her desk this morning. Xavier Clifford Whitaker.

I've crossed paths with Xavier a few times in my career. He's a smart-ass and too pretty for his own good, but he's damn good at his job. The last time I worked with him was about a year ago on a congressional campaign. Things were a mess, no one there on the assistant level had the slightest idea what to do. Then Xavier walked through the door. I said, "Thank God," and gave him a desk. A week later the place was running smoother than alot of campaigns I've seen in my time.

So I called Xavier up and gave him the job of my assistant. We set up a meeting and he'll start IMMEDIETLY.

Hopefully he'll get here before my new furniture.

Andrew left. He’s gone. Ten minutes ago she was a wife, a lover, one half of a pair. Yes things were a disaster, but ten minutes ago it was a disaster they were in together. And now she’s alone. shatter-v.-to cause to break or burst suddenly into pieces, as with a violent blowCollapse )

Listening: Songs For A New World

Here it is finally, my first entry into this journal. I always swore I would not begin using one of these ridiculous things. However, in today's politics it seems that any lunatic with a laptop can create a commotion, so I might as well be able to defend myself.

Also, of course, it gives me something to do when I'm pretending to think deeply about the inner meanings of the speech I'm writing. (I've actually just run out of synonyms for policy that don't make me sound like an imbecile.)

It would also seem that I am far behind all the rest of the staff in posting my first entry. Yet there is little to show for my time other than a partially written speech, an office yet to be unpacked, and a slightly edgy deputy.

I think I'm getting an ulcer.

I imagine that's just God's way of saying, "Welcome to the White House Katherine."

After years of lobbying, campaigning, and protesting, I can really do something now.

Time to get to work Kate.
